Species

Almond

A traditional high-value crop for western Afghanistan, well suited to Herat's dry summers and cold winters.

Scientific name: Prunus dulcis

Almonds are a long-standing orchard crop in the region: they tolerate dry summers, need cold winters to fruit well, and produce a storable, saleable harvest.

They need reliable watering while young and careful variety selection for late frosts — both part of how we plan almond orchards.
